Overview

This compound is a novel 3,6-disubstituted 2-pyridinecarboxamide derivative that acts as a potent small molecule activator of glucokinase (GK). Identified through discovery efforts at Banyu Pharmaceutical (a subsidiary of Merck), it targets glucokinase, an enzyme that serves as a glucose sensor in pancreatic beta cells and the liver to maintain systemic glucose homeostasis. By binding to an allosteric pocket on the enzyme, the compound increases the affinity of glucokinase for glucose, which subsequently stimulates insulin secretion and enhances hepatic glucose uptake. Although it has been investigated for its potential application in the treatment of type 2 diabetes, the compound is primarily used as a research tool and has no documented history of clinical development or commercial branding.
